479 kilometers From Stockholm

Viime vuoden parhaita levyjä sulatellessa on ilmestynyt kosolti uutta kiinnostavaa musiikkia. Ja olenpahan myös löytänyt vuoden 2009 listan tekemisen jälkeen sille kuuluvia levyjä. Nimeän alkuun viisi levyä, joiden paikka olisi hyvinkin voinut olla vuoden 2009 kärkikahinoissa, mikäli olisin "löytänyt" ne ajoissa. Listaan myös tämän hetken tuntuman ja mielentilan mukaan mielestäni parhaita vuoden 2010 levyjä, jotka hyvinkin todennäköisesti kolkuttelevat kärkisijoja, kun tulee aika rankata vuoden 2010 parhaat levyt.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - s/t (2009)

Erinomainen levy, joka on kolahtanut kovasti viime aikoina. Tarttuvaa, nostattavaa ja helposti lähestyttävää ajanhengen mukaista shoegaze/noise -vaikutteista indie popia. Nyt jos tekisin listan, niin tämä menisi heittäen top 5:een. Suosittelen varauksetta.

Girls - Album (2009)

Tässä levy, jota hypetettiin varsin paljon viime kesänä, mutta johon en oikein koskaan paneutunut sen enempää. Nyt kun sitten annoin levylle uuden mahdollisuuden, niin sen hienous paljastui. Muistuttaa hieman ehkä edellistä artistia, mutta soundi on ehkä hieman vähemmän utuinen. Olisi ollut viime vuonna top 10 ainesta.

The Very Best - Warm Heart of Africa (2009)

Tämän levyn noteerasin myös hyvin ajoin, mutta kuunteluun se pääsi vasta vuodenvaihteessa. Nimen takaa löytyvä Esau Mwamwaya on alun perin Malawista kotoisin, mikä kuuluu myös levyn etnoelektronisena soundina. Vampire Weekendin Ezra Koenig vierailee levyn nimikkoraidalla. Nautittavaa hyvänfiiliksen musiikkia, josta on vaikea olla pitämättä.

Sonic Boom Six - City of Thieves (2009)

Tämän artistin löysin sattumalta yhden ehdottoman suosikkiyhtyeeni The King Bluesin kautta. Sonic Boom Six soittaa monipuolista erilaisia vaikutteita yhdistelevää poliittista ska-punkia. Kappaleiden taso hieman vaihtelee, mutta parhaimmat raidat ovat täyttä rautaa. Kokonaisuutena ei ehkä ansaitse paikkaa viime vuoden top-listalla, mutta kolkuttelee kuitenkin lähellä sitä.

Julie Doiron - I Can Wonder What You Did with Your Day (2009)

Tässä eräs mielenkiintoinen legendaarisella Sub Popilla vaikuttava singer-songwriter, jolla on jo varsin kunnioitettava ura takana. Naisvokalistit ovat jotenkin vedonneet minuun viime aikoina ja kyseinen artisti ja levy on ollut itselleni varsin mainio uusi tuttavuus. Erityisesti raita "Spill Yer Lungs" nousee levyltä esiin.

Surfer Blood - Astro Coast

Tässä on bändi, jolla on ainekset uudeksi Vampire Weekendiksi. Levy on täynnä mitä erinomaisempaa kitaravetoista surffihenkistä indie rockia. Toistaiseksi vielä harva tuntee artistia, mutta hype on selvästi kasvamassa. Mielestäni täysin aiheesta. Tulee olemaan aivan varmasti korkealla vuoden parhaita levyjä listattaessa.

Owen Pallett - Heartland

Final Fantasy alteregon hylännyt kanadalainen artisti on tehnyt ensimmäistä kertaa levyn omalla nimellään. Uusi levy jatkaa kahden ensimmäisen erinomaisen viuluvetoisen barokkipop levyn jalanjäljillä. Näin artistin livenä viime vuoden Flowssa, mikä oli ehdottomasti vuoden helmiä. Toivottavasti Pallett ulottaisi uuden levynsä myötä kiertueensa jälleen Suomeen. Ei ehkä ihan kaikkein helpoiten lähestyttävää musiikkia, mutta kiistatta hienon taiteilijan työn tulos. Pidän kovasti.

Shearwater - The Golden Archipelago

Okkervill Riverissä vaikuttavan Will Sheffin sivuprojekti. Shearwaterin tuotanto on kenties hieman folkhenkisempää kuin Okkervil Riverin. Tämä on joka tapauksessa mitä kaunein levy. Kappale "Castaways" on kenties yksi upeimpia kappaleita, mitä olen koskaan kuullut, johon voi huoletta liittää ylikäytetiyn adjektiivin "majestettinen". Levy vaatii vielä hieman lisäkuuntelua, mutta tulee hyvin todennäköisesti ansaitsemaan paikkansa hyllyssä.

Yeasayer - Odd Blood

Erinomaisen debyyttilevyn tehneen bändin toinen levy. Mielestäni erittäin onnistut sellainen. Popahtavuudessaan ehkä hieman helpommin lähestyttävä kuin ensimmäinen levy, mutta silti myös kokeilevuudessaan riittävän haastava.

Vampire Weekend - Contra

Tätä levyä ovat monet odottaneet kuin kuuta nousevaa epärealistisin kovin odotuksin. Yleisesti ottaen kriitikot ovat ottaneet bändin toisen, peräti Yhdysvaltojen listaykköseksi nousseen, levyn hyvin vastaan. Mielestäni se ei yllä debyyttilevyn tasolla, mutta on kaiken kaikkiaan kuitenkin erinomainen levy, joka sinetöinee bändin aseman yhtenä suurimmista indie bändeistä, mitä tällä hetkellä on.

Hot Chip - One Life Stand

Vaikka Hot Chip on jo niittänyt mainetta aiemmilla levyillään, niin itse löysin tämän oikeastaan vasta tämän uuden levyn myötä. Kaikessa vaihtelevuudessaan erinomainen, itselleni ajoittain New Orderin mieleen tuova, electropop-levy, jonka arvostus saattaa hyvinkin vielä nousta lisäkuuntelun myötä.

Alkuvuoden kovimmat levyt

Again has the time risen when all self respecting music journalists (and occasional amateurs) draw up their top lists of the year 2009. As a burgeoning bloggist (?), I also set as my task to list my favourite albums of 2009, just like I did last year. The top 5 was actually pretty obvious for me, but otherwise, I have tried to carefully consider the positions from 6-10. Some of the records bubbling under might have made the top list if I would have had the chance and interest to listen to them more. I leave more accurate, inclusive and sophisticated top lists to be done by professionals. Surely there are lots of gems I didn't have the chance to find, please feel free to inform me about these. Nevertheless, this is my humble personal opinion of a pretty good music year 2009.

Because of the end of the decade there are also lists of the best records made in the 2000's (eg. Rolling Stone). I believe it’s too difficult a task to make a list of the best albums of the first decade of the millennium. At least yet. I belive the significance of a record is discovered only in time and a list of the best albums of the decade would perhaps be worthwile say in 5-10 years or so. Also, as the world of music is such a fragmented one nowadays, I doubt that any magazine or journalist could ever do an inclusive list of the best music made in the 00’s. Perhaps a good thing to keep in mind reading any list of best new records.

1) Mount Eerie – Wind’s Dark Poem

In the end this was quite an easy choice for me. One of my most listened albums of the year, works especially in the morning. This is a beautiful but strange mix of ambient wind sound scrapes blended with experimental folk with slight metal influences. Not an easy one in any way, but a true grower. Took me a while to get into this modern masterpiece. Glad I did.

2) Fuck Buttons – Tarot Sport

If the first album took me a while to get into, this one struck me right away. It’s one of those experimental but still enjoyably lifting electronic albums best enjoyed while lying on a sofa with your feet up reading a good book. Managed also to see them live in October at Kuudes linja. Was well worth it.

3) The Mountain Goats – The Life of the World to Come

The new album from my favourite band whose last album I ranked as number one on my last year list. I was a bit scared first of the biblical concept and all that, but you can hardly call this Christian rock. The album is an absolutely beautiful, although quite a dark one. Not the easiest album made by John Darnielle but worth an effort. I sometimes use this as sleep music, which I guess indicates the serenity of the sound of piano present in most of the songs.

Also should note that The Mountain Goats made an absolutely brilliant Ep in collaboration with John Vanderslice about organ harvesting colonies on the moon. I didn’t want to include an Ep on the list but if I would have, this one would have deffo been in my top 5. Highly recommended also.

4) The xx – xx

One of the most hyped artists of the year in the music media. IMO for a perfectly good reason. Atmospheric and calm indie rock, best enjoyed late at night. ‘Nuff said.

5) Frank Turner – The Poetry of the Deed

Mr Turner is one of my current favourite artists who I had the utmost pleasure to see two times live this year. A charismatic stage performer who also has a history degree from LSE. This is his third solo album after the breakdown of the hard core punk band Million Dead. Also arguably his best one so far. There might not be as much stand out tracks as in his first efforts but the work is much more consistent. So it’s quite a rewarding one after some listens. I do believe Turner could do better but as such, this is a great folk punk effort from Frankie and one of my most listened albums also this year. When I grow up I wanna be just like Frank Turner.

6) Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle

Bill Callahan is better known recording under the name ’Smog’. Follows the same foot prints with this work released under his own name. The album is top notch lo-fi singer-songwriter material which is hard not to enjoy although the songs do have quite dark themes.

7) Dinosaur Jr. – Farm

They have been recording since the 1980’s but their new album was, for me, an introduction to this great band. The album is solid as steel, I’d call it great alternative rock with a slightly nostalgic sound of the early 1990’s.

8) Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

One of the most catchiest albums of the year from the well-known French band. Not much bad to say about this. It’s perfect pop music for a sunny day.

9) Regina Spektor – Far

Although an established artist for some years already, I hadn’t listened to her before her new album. Has recieved a bit mixed reviews, but for me this was among the most enjoyable listens of the year. Cheerfull, playfull, not too serious but, nevertheless, ambitious enough not to be taken lightly.

10) The Big Pink - A Brief History of Love

Also a well-hyped new comer. Atmospheric shoegaze indie rock with influences of noise rock. A great debut album that includes great stand-out single tracks. Managed to see them at Flow Festival, they had the unfortunate task to perform at the same time as Lily Allen (not hard to guess which one drew the crowds). One of the most interesting debutants of the year I would say.

The title is not a typo and I really am talking about 2008. A year ago I listed my favourite albums for the year 2008. To refresh my memory while working a new list for this year I went through the list of last year and decided to post it on this blog. Although a year later I would change some albums on the list I, nevertheless, stand behind the list which I consider to be relatively successfull. Below the list in full.

My top 10 albums of 2008

The year is coming to its end and all kinds of top album 2008 lists are popping out all over the web. Some are crap some are class. Regardless of to which of these categories this one belongs to, I decided, inspired by the flow, to do my own one from the best albums I have come up with released during the fine year of 2008. Maybe somebody will get some tips from this list or be inspired to do a list of his/her own. Anyway, no use keeping this secret. Here it comes.

1. The Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride

I actually only discovered this band this fall. It’s kind of surprising because they have been out there since the early 90’s. Anyway, I’m ever so happy I did eventually find them. I have been totally blown away with this band for the last few months. This album released last spring isn’t as lo-fi as most of the previous works the band has done. The main man, John Darnielle, has added up some extra instruments and done a bit more rocking tunes than usually. The lyrics are, nevertheless, as imaginative as ever and the songs are among the catchiest ones Darnielle has written to this date. I recommend this for everyone. 2. LITE – Phantasia

I managed to see this Japanese math-rock gem last year while living in Ireland. Otherwise I probably would never have heard about them in my lifetime. Their recent album is a pretty mind blowing experience from the very first listen. An absolute must for fans of instrumental melodic math-rock or post-rock. Check out: Infinite Mirror, Ef

3. Fight Like Apes - Fight Like Apes And The Mystery Of The Golden Medallion

In my opinion, this rising Irish act is one of the best live bands there is to see out there. I would probably describe their music as shoegaze. This is their great debut album released this fall. It is is really catching, uplifting and fun to listen to. Excellent party stuff. One of those albums, that while listening, you find your head automatically starting to nod with great acceptance up and down with the rhythm. Check out: Jake Summers, Lend Me Your Face

4. Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours

The Australian electronic/synth pop act has done here perhaps a bit more mainstream second album than their first one was. Anyway, I like their sophomore album more. The tunes in this new release are melodic, catching, uplifting and they get you in a good mood. A regular visitor in Finland too. Check out: Hearts on Fire, Unforgettable Season

5. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

A beautiful debut lo-fi album from the American indie singer-songwriter. I remember reading some review where it was said that this album catches the spirit of being alone in a cottage in the woods. Well, the reason for this could possibly be that the album was recorded during four months in a remote cabin in Wisconsin. Great and touching stuff. Just add some logs to the fireplace, light a candle and do whatever you do in a remote place. Check out: For Emma, Skinny Love

6. Joensuu 1685 - Joensuu 1685

In my list, this is the best Finnish album released this year I have come around. The opening track is probably one of the greatest openings you could possible ever imagine for an album. A must for any fan of shoegaze or psychedelic rock. A great live band also. Check out: You Shine Brighter Than Light, Nothingness

7. Paavoharju - Laulu laakson kukista

More Finnish stuff. I guess this is band located in the scary sounding freak folk subgenre. The tracks vary quite a lot from each other but in overall the album is a calm and relaxing experimental journey. Just sit back and relax. Check out: Tyttö tanssii, Pimeänkarkelo

8. Detektivbyrån – Wermland

This Swedish act is quite special in my opinion. I would describe this as Yann Tiersen Amélie-era influenced toy instrument stuff played with a cool electronic twist. Check out: Om du möter varg, Life/Universe

9. Mogwai - The Hawk is Howling

The masters of instrumental post-rock are back better than ever. Well, this isn’t their best album but a good one it is, and a must for fans of the band and melodic post-rock. Check out: I’m Jim Morrison, I’m dead, Batcat

10. Murmansk - Chinese Locks

One of the most promising albums released in Finland this year in my opinion. I would perhaps like to call this band post-punk. Some call it shoegaze. Anyway, the tracks are great and catchy (work even better live). I predict a great future for this act. Check out: Melvin Told Me, Pale

Billy Bragg mainitaan usein Turnerista puhuttaessa ja tähän on olemassa perusteensa. Frank Turner ammentaa kappaleidensa sanoituksia samoista omakohtaisista teemoista kuin nuori Bragg 1980-luvulla - vasemmistoromantiikasta sekä aikuistumisesta, pyrkien olemaan sukupolvensa tuntemusten ääni. Kun Bragg aloitti uransa yhden miehen orkesterina soittamalla sähkökitarallaan Lontoon kaduilla punkvaikutteista folkia, niin Turner aloitti uransa hard core –punkbändissä nimeltään Million Dead, jonka hajottua 2005 hän siirtyi soolouralle soittamaan akustista folk punkia. Turner kävi mm. kesällä 2009 soittamassa Suomessa yksin akustisen keikan, mutta nyt hän oli tuonut bändin mukanaan.

Frank Turnerin levyjä vaivaa tietynlainen epätasaisuus. Kolmen levyn kohokohdat ovat lähes parasta musiikkia, mitä kukaan nykyään tekee, mutta levyillä on ollut taipumusta sisältää turhan paljon täyteraitoja, mikä valitettavasti estää niitä nousemasta sellaisinaan klassikoiksi. Tähän on syynä kenties Turnerin liiankin tiheä työtahti (kolme levyä kolmessa vuodessa, jatkuva kiertäminen). Turnerin liveshowssa ei sitten tätä ongelmaa ole, vaan ns. täyteraidat jäävät sivuun levyjen kohokohtien vyöryessä peräjälkeen. Samoin jos joku artisti osaa yleisönsä ottaa, niin Turner sen osaa paremmin kuin useimmat. Eräs esimerkki Turnerin joviaalista lavakäyttäytymisestä sekä yleisön huomioimisesta oli kun hän kutsui yleisön joukosta satunnaisen keikkailijan soittamaan huuliharppusoolon kepeän nostalgiseen uusimman levyn ehdottomaan parhaimmistoon lukeutuvaan Dan’s Songiin. Harvoin jos koskaan kuulee keikoilla myöskään vastaavaa yhteislaulua isolle osalle yleisöä kuitenkin verrattain vieraista kappaleista.

Uudelta levyltä keikalla kuultiin sen kohokohtiin lukeutuvat Live Fast Die Old, Try This at Home, Dan’s Song, Isabel ja Sons of Liberty. Kahdelta ensimmäiltä levyltä esittettiin ainakin The Real Damage, The Ballad of Me and My Friends, Photsynthesis, I Knew Prufrock Before He Got Famous, Love Ire & Song sekä Long Live The Queen. Turner esitti myös yhden uuden kappaleen, joka tosin sitten vaikutti ensikuulemalta osuvan enemmän täyteraita kuin kohokohta kategoriaan. Jos jotain yksittäisi hetkiä tulee nostaa muiden yläpuolelle, niin ne olisivat jo kehuttu Dan’s Song sekä encoreina kuultu, kuin yhteislaulua varten luodut, The Ballad of Me and My Friends sekä Photosynthesis.

Voin varsin huoletta sanoa, että kyseessä oli mielestäni eräs vuoden parhaista näkemistäni keikoista, jota osasin kyllä odottaakin Pitkän kuuman kesän perusteella. Tässä on artisti, joka kannattaa käydä katsomassa, vielä kun hän mahtuu soittamaan pienemmille rockklubeille. Erityismaininnan loppuun ansaitsee vielä myös suomalainen lämmittelijä, kahden miehen folk punk orkesteri Jaakko & Jay. Kaksikko nautti selvästi olostaan lavalla ja osasi myös ottaa yleisönsä. Kappaleet eivät sinällään olleet niin kummoisia, mutta intensiteetti, jolla ne esitettiin kyllä vakuutti sen verta paljon, että levy tarttui keikalta mukaan. Ehdottomasti yksi mielenkiintoismpia kotimaisia tuttavuuksia tänä vuonna.

Tämä on tämän blogin avauspostaus, joten lyhyt johdanto lienee tarpeen. Viimeisten vuosien aikana musiikki on käynyt itselleni yhä tärkeämmäksi. Olen toki aina kuunnellut musiikkia, mutta uusien jakelukanavien, asiantuntevien ystävien sekä yleisen kiinnostuksen lisääntymisen kautta, olen saanut tilaisuuden löytää aiempaa enemmän kiinnostavia uusia levyjä sekä artisteja. Viimeisten vuosien aikana olen myös alkanut harrastamaan enemmän keikoilla käyntiä. Usein minulla on ollut seurana kaverini Viljami, jonka olen myös kutsunut mukaan tämän blogin ylläpitämiseen. Kun nykyään keikoilla tulee käytyä harva se viikko ja uusia levyjä kuunneltua lähes päivittäin, niin miksei sitten kirjata ajatuksia näistä ylös.

Blogin luonne ja päivitystiheys on vielä avoin, mutta ideana olisi kirjoittaa harrastuksena keikka-arvioita ja mahdollisesti myös levyarvioita. Blogin nimi viittaa luonnollisesti Helsingin ja Tukholman väliseen etäisyyteen, joka aiemmin oli ylitsepääsemättömän pitkä monille Eurooppaa kiertäville artisteille. Tilanne ei ole nykyään läheskään niin paha, joten kyseiset 479 kilometeriä ovat käyneet huomattavasti merkityksettömämmiksi tänä päivänä, mistä kiitos kuuluu varmasti ennen kaikkea alalle ilmestyneille aktiivisille uusille promoottoreille. Enemmän blogin perustamisessa on ideana, että saisi ylös jotain konkreettista muistoa levyistä ja keikoista, jotka häipyisivät muuten itseltä unholaan, mutta miksei tämä voisi mahdollisesti hyödyttää myös muita musiikinystäviä.
